by Stephen R. Lawhead ‧ RELEASE DATE: Sept. 1, 1983
Following two rickety fantasy outings, Lawhead moves into sf--with preachy, predictable results. Spencer Reston is aboard space station Gotham doing research on space-sleep, using himself as the experimental subject; after a number of terrifying dreams and inexplicable blackouts, he realizes that someone is trying to take over his mind. (Directing things from his Himalayan castle is the malevolent Ortu, the Dream Thief, while his evil, crippled assistant, Hocking, hides aboard Gotham.) So, after falling in love with beautiful Ad and confiding in Indian polymath Adjani, Spence escapes the dreams by fleeing to Mars--where he stumbles into a tunnel, discovers an ancient underground city, and reconstitutes a Martian, Kyr. (The other Martians left years ago when their planet died.) And finally, with a miracle or two from God, Spence escapes to Earth, tracking down Ortu and his mind-controlling machine. (Ortu turns out to be a renegade Martian and inspirer of the Hindu pantheon.) A simple, unsurprising plot padded out to 700+ pages--with juvenile doings, bland action, and extensive emphasis on Spence's conversion from unbeliever to theist.
