by Stephen W. Meader ‧ RELEASE DATE: Aug. 21, 1963
When Ben Everett left quiet Maine at the age of sixteen to enlist in the Union Army, he did not picture himself sweating out part of the war in a run down prison camp, or constantly escaping, hiding, etc. Mr. Meader who has written successfully about the Civil War before (Phantom of the Blockade, 1962, p.524, J-144) manages to keep sight of the Maine lad through endless confusion. With no lilting romance tucked in, this picaresque saga of the war is an all boys' book. Boys will appreciate the attention which the author gives to military tactics and the thorough account he presents of prison life.
