NIGHT OUTLASTS THE WHIPPOORWILL

Tremendously interesting story of a Wisconsin small town during the years of the war -- husbands and lovers on the other side -- hatred of Germany taken out on loyal, unassuming German-Americans. Makes one feel that Americans today do a good deal of pot calling the kettle black. As a human document it is thoroughly worth while -- as a novel it marks a big advance over Ploughing on Sunday.
