BILL SHAW, FRUIT TRAMP

Bill Shaw does not share his father's wanderlust. Harvesting crops holds no joy for Bill who longs for the day when he can pursue an education and become a doctor. The Shaw family, their wandering existence as itinerant fruit pickers, up and down the West Coast, the disrupted friendships and daily emergencies are depicted with conviction. Bill's delight in a dog whom he names Apricots, his investment in a first aid kit and his hopes for a microscope make interesting reading. Bill's mother, who doesn't like their nomadic life is a portrait of patience. The day on which Mr. Shaw decides to settle down, putting an end to the wandering days, makes Bill's dreams a possibility.
