HEARTSHOT

What looks like a buddy-cop debut novel--kid-faced undercover cop Art Hewitt moves into aging, tubby Undersheriff Bill Gastner's house as his grandson and enrolls in a New Mexico high school after a high-speed chase leaves five teen-agers dead, with a $150,000 cocaine stash in their wrecked car--explodes when Art and Benny Fernandez, grieving father of one of the teens, kill each other in a shootout. That leaves only dogged, sententious Bill to vow that there won't be any more killings as he throws away the rulebook and punishes his own failing body to follow the trail of the drugs, which will lead to two more murders (sorry, Bill), some drawn-out aerial heroics, and a pretty obvious criminal. Too much procedural detail, from 10-4 to 10-65--even Bill will be puzzled--but the story is well-paced and heartfelt.
