WON'T SOMEBODY PLAY WITH ME

The basic plot -- a little girl feels rejected on her birthday because none of her friends can come out to play, then discovers that they've been preparing a surprise party for her -- is a nursery staple, but Kellogg's pictures are something else. As in Can I Keep Him (1971) he relies on illustration to carry an unoriginal story; but instead of the witty detail of the former this has the oddly garish rainbow colors and repellent humanoid creatures of Kellogg's subsequent books. Kim's fantasies of all the things she and her friends migh pretend, later how she'll punish them for leaving her out, give Kellogg the chance to indulge in all the bone-chewing monsters and gross carnival landscapes he seems to find amusing.
