A robot-like recitation of information on America's number one killer. First describing how the heart works, this quick overview then launches into a rundown of the most common cardiac diseases. The dry style makes no attempt at leading young readers to a deeper understanding of the complicated material. Unfamiliar terminology is not adequately defined within the text, forcing constant referral to the glossary. Important ethical issues regarding heart transplants are given perfunctory treatment. The black-and-white illustrations are clear and serviceable, but the same illustrations are repeated in a superfluous color insert. The Story of Your Heart by Peter Limburg and Heartbeats by Alvin and Virginia Silverstein both cover heart disease far more effectively.
