An excursion into the psychotic mind introduces us to Nora Emlaine, released from a sanitsrium to weave a bloody tapestry on a distorted woof. She finds the gray eyes, which must watch and forgive her, in the face of ordinary Ed Harlon, who marries her for an easy living that brings him an uneasy death. Nora disposes of her husbands, exhibits and withholds herself as she lives in the gradual recognition of her father's treachery in raping her and her grandmother's denying an incestuous love (the corpses of Gram and an innocent sailor are strewn in the living past).
