A GIRL NAMED SOONER

A cloying, sentimental novel about the adoption (housebreaking) of a ten-year-old orphan named Sooner (born too soon for her father to be her father). A Southern Illinois vet, naturally, is taken by this wild child with her chipmunk and redwing (wild bird) pets, and he dumps Sooner on his barren wife, who first resists her, then loves her, incidentally saving their marriage. Lots of ""homely insights"" by the characters into the nature of love (thinking about others), lust (monogamy is best) and giving (hooray!), against the backdrop of the Depression and small-town Republicanism, nostalgic morality that is occasionally still pleasant to hear about.
