ORP AND THE CHOP SUEY BURGERS

Kline's second book about Orville Rudmeyer Pygenski, Jr., involves the list-making protagonist in a cooking contest, with mildly entertaining results. Seventh-grader Orp is musing about never getting to go anywhere when he spots an ad for a cooking contest: first prize, a trip to Disney World. Orp begins experimenting and comes up with a mixture of canned chop-suey vegetables and the soy sauce produced by the contest's sponsor. To his own surprise, Orp is a finalist, winning a trip to Boston; and, while he doesn't win first prize, he does make good use of his honorable-mention winnings (five cases of chop-suey vegetables) at a school fair. The fun of this flight story is derived from Orp's cheerfully wry tone as he gives his own version of his experiences; he's an engaging character whose escapades should continue to amuse middle-graders.
