by Syd Hoff ‧ RELEASE DATE: Sept. 13, 1961
Little Chief was a lonely little Indian. Neither his relatives nor the animals he knew would play with him the way real children could. Then from out of the East comes a wagon train loaded with children and Little Chief is overjoyed to teach them his games and to play some of theirs. A menacing buffalo herd is held off by the little Indian who once helped one of the animals find his way back to the herd, and it is Little Chief's valor that saves the wagon train and decides the future of its members. With only a few words and many more vivid, lively, colorful pictures, Syd Hoff imparts a surprising amount of information, a worthwhile moral and a good story whose action should encourage beginning readers to forge ahead.
