A detailed discussion of the life cyle of both spring and winter wheat, with some brief concluding words on harvesting and wheat's world, wide importance as a food in different forms. The outstanding feature of this Japanese import is the crisply reproduced color photos, including fields of wheat at different stages of maturation, close-ups (along with cross-sections), and microphotography of cell structure and pollination. A few photos seem to have been replaced with American scenes (a John Deere tractor, for instance); others, with unfamiliar-looking mountain profiles, may be Japan. Though the ""Natural Science"" series editor has been credited as author--and the text refers mostly to the US--Suzuki was the original author. A confusing error: a map showing where winter and spring wheat are grown has the areas reversed. On the whole, a smooth adaptation, useful and attractive. Glossary; index.
