A very important book as a source of information about actual records of Soviet activities in the Arctic, but frightfully dull, unnecessarily dull, reading. Contrast this with Smolka's 40,000 Against The Arctic, (Morrow), which is a full-blooded, dramatic story, and you will realize that one is a book for the layman, the other a book for the seeker of cut and dried facts as to geographic, geological and physiological data, specific chronology of expeditions and findings, facts about flora and fauna, and so on. Probably everything is there, but it is there simply in bald statement for the reader or the researcher or the scientist to discover. Even the possible results, internationally, are a matter of guarded suggestion.
