The caustic perpetrator of Goodbye, Mr. Chippendale, (1944) turns his X-ray on modern art- to lay the nightmare of the isms and ists that have been fashionable, to expose a hoax, more serious than the earlier book. From pre-Raphaelite to Dali, is the development of the artist from craftsman to mystic, the growth of the occult to dominate individual aesthetic choice. His argument follows the parallel of world affairs, and imparts a deeper importance to the works of the various schools, and the sinister nobbism of the Museum of Modern Art. Manifesto against bats-in-the-belfry schools, and those who sustain them, of more than usual interest because of the author's role as modern decorator. The expected sparkle, but slightly dimmed by over-italicized thesis.
