NO JUMPING ON THE BED!

Quietly funny dream-or-is-it-real adventure. Just after he's tucked in and left alone, and though his father tells him not to, Walter jumps on his bed. He lives on the second highest floor of a tall apartment building; when his bed crashes through the floor, he finds himself in Miss Hattie's dining room, where she's eating spaghetti. Eventually, on a long fall through the building's apartments, Walter (and his bed), Miss Hattie (and her spaghetti), gather Mr. Matty and his TV set and aquarium, Walter's Aunt Batty and her stamp collection, Patty and Natty and their huge, carefully constructed building of blocks, Mr. Hanratty and his easel and paints, and Maestro Ferlingatti and his string quartet. Back in his room again, Walter might be having second thoughts about jumping on his bed. Then his best friend Delbert, who lives in the apartment above Waiter's and is also a devotee of bed jumping, crashes through Waiter's ceiling with his bed. The pictures exude much dreamlike warmth, especially the floppy cloth dog that Walter manages not to lose during his fall (though the people wear the same wooden expressions as the toys). The serviceable text is engaging enough to please moat readers.
