by Theodor Reik ‧ RELEASE DATE: Oct. 12, 1952
A casebook of analytic experience ""in Life and Literature"" by the friend and interpreter and disciple of Freud which continues the processes of Listening With The Third Ear with some ""precipitations of experiences that have sifted through the filter of rational scrutiny and psychological examination"". Here the technique of free association is given a full demonstration, as his sessions with or dreams of his patients, or at times his own emotional reactions, provoke an inquiry which leads to literary parallels- in Shakespeare, Goethe, Heine, Ibsen, etc. for mutual enlightenment of relationships, of sexual symbols, of the death wish, etc. etc. Reik has a certain following- but for the general reader, this is a type of depth psychology in which he will flounder, undisciplined and digressive as it is in its handling-extremist in its interpretations.
