Here the technique of free association is given a full demonstration, as his sessions with or dreams of his patients, or at times his own emotional reactions, provoke an inquiry which leads to literary parallels- in Shakespeare, Goethe, Heine, Ibsen, etc. for mutual enlightenment of relationships, of sexual symbols, of the death wish, etc. etc. Reik has a certain following- but for the general reader, this is a type of depth psychology in which he will flounder, undisciplined and digressive as it is in its handling-extremist in its interpretations.
