by Theodore Dreiser ‧ RELEASE DATE: Nov. 6, 1947
Again a posthumous publication, in a sober, stalwart and graceless portrait of a man, Frank Cowperwood, and the negotiations, personal and financial, of a self-centered, self-indulgent big businessman. The story is concentrated on Cowperwood's later years of monetary success, his second marriage to Aileen, who bores him, his relationship with Berenice, who fascinates him, but who does not exclude minor mistresses. Of their activities in England, in France, where Cowperwood hires Tollifer, professional ladies' man, to distract Aileen, as he does business and carries on his relationship with Berenice. Then of his final weeks, dying of Bright's disease, leaving his estate to disintegrate and Berenice to solace in Yogi... Dreiser's reputation will assure a respectful press, but one questions a popular audience.
