Berson's fluent clarity is evident here but there's none of his saucy French folktale wit in this Babes in Toyland crew or in Roberts' conventional story of a loner making friends. Jenny, at the park with her dog Mose and her toy animals and soldiers, envies the pirate ship launched in the pond by a group of boys who tease her about the boat she's made from a walnut shell. Then the S.S. Walnut grows into a fine schooner and Jenny, Mose and the toys board her, set sail and do battle with the boys who now man the pirate ship. Jenny wins by cannon-shooting a tree which falls on The Skull and sinks it, and even though it all turns out to be a daydream the boys' pirate ship has been crushed by a falling log and the kids now gather round Jenny to play with her toys. Berson's outdoor setting introduces some fresh air and sunshine to an otherwise unremarkable nursery fantasy.
