There surely is agreement among Christians that the parable of the prodigal son is the greatest story Jesus ever told. In many ways its repeated retelling loses fire because of the very familiarity which comes with frequent hearing. Yet there is far more here than meets eye or ear, and the Rev. Thos. A. Whiting, minister of the First Methodist Church, Valdosta, Georgia, has been well advised to make available to the reading public these 12 sermons, which, without bombast or flamboyant oratory, find in this parable the whole story of man's predicament and God's loving action in closing the gap between Himself and his creature. Man's freedom is here, and the potential glory of it, and a basic understanding of human behavior, both good and bad, which come from a knowledge of modern advance in the behavioral sciences. But the story is God's, whose most loving act toward man was the coming of Jesus, seeking to redeem by getting his hands in the whole dirty business. Even compulsive sermon readers will be helped by this one.
