THE BEST POEMS OF 1942

Too bad that the coming-of-age of this series could not be celebrated by a more distinguished collection of verse. Perhaps these are the ""best poems of 1942"" -- but it is a disappointing collection. English, American, Irish, Canadian authors represented including such familiar names as Masefield, de is Mare, David Morton, Babette Deutsch, V. Sackville-West, Gogarty, Stephen Spender, Conrad Aiken, Blunden, etc. The general tone seems to be one of deliberate withdrawal from the tempo of the times.
