Here is no English (or rather Welsh) equivalent of A House in the Country. It is closer, perhaps, to We Farm for a Hobby and Make It Pay. But any record on farming or country living here pales into insignificance beside the challenge of commercial sheep raising on a Welsh mountainside (with cattle and hogs and chickens -- and even a snack bar -- on the side). It is an intimate picture, with the hows and whys livened by anecdotes of the mishaps and the painful process of learning, and brightened by mountain climbing holidays. That section of Wales (I happen to know it) comes back vividly in these pages.
