A new role- to American readers- for the Canadian novelist -- in a story of a remote outpost, a radio station on Marina Island, graveyard of ships, and of the stormy emotional conflict as Isabel Jardine, thirty and disillusioned as to romance throws in her lot with Matt Carney, fabled Viking radio operator, who seemed to like Marina. On leave- after ten isolated years- Matt Carney finds the world has passed him by. Only Isabel can strike a spark, and at the eleventh hour he asks her to marry him, offers to abandon Marina for another post -- and then accepts her decision to go back with him. But Marina is worse than she had imagined; she rebuffs Matt for a time- then seeks his attentions- and finally betrays him when the changes of the winter rigors prove too much for her -- and for Greg Skane, assistant chief. Then an accident seems to write finis. She thinks she has escaped her fate- and only a chance and belated discovery reveals where her real love lies- and her salvation. While the basic pattern is a not unfamiliar one, Raddall has given it new twists- and told his story against a primitive and weirdly fascinating setting.
