BAD MOON RISING

The idea of an anthology of political science fiction is splendid but not all the material lives up to the timely intelligence of the theme. The poetry, with the exception of Carol Emshwiller's powerful free verse, is mediocre. The short stories are more intriguing, especially Harlan Ellison's urban horror story and Kate Wilhelm's bucolic one, while Geo. Alec Efflinger's monstrous answer to the population problem, Gene Wolfe's tale of politics and martyrdom and editor Disch's story give new depth to the cliche comparison between ancient Rome and 20th century America.
