Thomas Merton has brought together in this little volume seventeen short poems most of which had previously appeared in various magazines. This is modern Catholic mysticism set to poetry. The title is taken from Leon Bloy: ""When those who love God try to talk about Him, their words are blind lions looking for a spring in the desert"". This quotation, and the title give an indication of the prevailing mood of all the poems; a burning faith which is in great and sorrowful labor to give birth to adequate expression. While there is great beauty in these poems, the imagery is involved and the meaning abstruse. For example, one poem expounds the doctrine of the Trinity and it is certainly no easier to understand in this form. However, followers of Thomas Merton and of modern poetry as well will be interested in this little book. There is also a fifty cent paper edition, with a mailing envelope, so that this may be used as a Christmas greeting.
