As anyone who recalls last year's The Save Your Life Diet knows, Dr. Reuben attributes cancer, heart disease, diverticulosis, obesity, and a wide range of other disorders to improper diet--specifically a diet deficient in roughage and high in ""semisynthetic junk food."" It's a theory with a long genealogy and its proponents include Adelle Davis and Carlton Fredericks and others who see carcinogens in every food preservative and chemical additive on the market. Reuben tends to the same kind of categorical absolutism as other diet czars--e.g. ""over a million lives could be saved each year at absolutely no cost by simply leaving the natural roughage in our food. . . ."" Such medical evidence as he cites is inevitably extrapolated from research done on rats. On to the health-giving alternative to America's processed ""lethal"" diet. The Reubens like garlic, oatmeal, cracked wheat, nuts, raisins, rice, barley, and homemade bread. They've made an effort to mix up Armenian, Mexican, and Chinese dishes to avoid monotony. Some of the recipes have ""Quick and Easy"" and ""Super Instant"" versions. And they are really perfectly okay. Since the Reubens don't believe in the cholesterol hazard, butter, eggs and cream are used freely, and they don't insist on ""organically grown."" Eat right, you can't go wrong--and get your cancer from the pollutants in the air.
