From Holland, a shaggy dog (or goose) version of an old proverb, wherein Benny, six, ventures off in search (literally) of greener grasses and finds them--after making his way down a well, through a maze, across snowy hills, and over a high wall--in his own back yard. Along the way he keeps running into a wizard who doles out directions, and he bargains away his geese a few at a time in transactions we are evidently intended to interpret as wise decisions on his part. There are some nice touches, such as the man who had roamed about in his youth "". . . but here the pancakes are delicious,"" but overall this would need a lot of tightening to pass for a traditional tale. In the same spirit, Ivo de Weerd routes his cloyingly innocent, Keene-eyed hero though a sun-drenched, fakey-folkish candyland--a comparison that the appended, double-page ""Royal Goose"" board game brings readily to mind.
