ALL THE TIME THERE IS

At 43, Anne Durham has been widowed for eleven years and remains un-remarried in spite of the too-obvious efforts of her only daughter. But Anne knows how to manage a life alone, working in her New York antique store and pursuing all those dandy self-reinforcing activities--like swimming, exercises, and the care of non-talking-back plants. Family man David may come in from Chicago once a month on business, but he and other occasionals are all there is in that department. Then, one of the two homosexuals in the next apartment suddenly dies, and Charles Robinson, the survivor, is even more alone than Anne is--boycotted by the straight world and by his dead lover's relatives. Anne pays him a condolence call, bringing a chocolate cake, and they go on to share concerts and long walks. But will Charles be able to answer Anne's real needs and achieve his first experience with a woman? Toby Stein uses a confidential tone with just the right, light, gracious accessories (a zucchini omelet, for instance), but it doesn't amount to much more than a crepe de chine nightgown that clings with decorative ardor.
