The author of Virgin with Butterflies comes to earth with the story of a carnival touring the South, and the love of two men for the same girl. Don and Tex, one with a past wiped out of his mind, the other broken in health, are hired by kindly Unc, and lose their hearts to Bathsheba, who is the target for her father's whip and knife act. They are one in their desire to protect her from her father's dangerous hatred, but their friendship is split when Sheba prefers Don. Then his family catch up with him -- and with the climax of Uno's death, and the killing of Sheba's father, Don's memory is restored and he goes back to his wife... Tex wins his love and has hope restored that his back can be cured... More of a story than the earlier book, though still a bit on the slim side. The implications of the trick title need not worry the conservatives.
