WATCH OUT FOR THE CHICKEN FEET IN YOUR SOUP

Joey, mio bambino! How nice you come to see grandma."" Joey, who was a little uneasy about introducing his friend Eugene to his funny old grandma, doesn't feel at all nice when Eugene, who has finished his spaghetti first, gets to help grandma make her braided bread dolls. But of course Joey is comforted on leaving with a gift of the fanciest bread loaf of all -- just ""because you are my special Joey."" Tomie de Paola appends a recipe for the bread dolls which he remembers from his own grandmother's kitchen, and both his cozy pictures and his simple text (which is all dialogue and almost entirely make up of the expansive grandma's fond fussing) glow with a genuine warmth that other visitors of whatever background can't help sharing.
