by Tony Weinberger ‧ RELEASE DATE: May 10, 1971
Max's Kansas City"" is the place where East and West Village collide to trade outrageous stories over chick peas, steak and lobster. It's a freak zone where the Warhol crowd holds court and artists, writers and underground filmmakers serve as jesters. In its heyday it was lively and interesting and it certainly deserves a better spokesman than Mr. Weinberger, a ""loft builder"" who has, admittedly, come into contact with some other-worldly types. Like Paul, the Long Island Oyster Bed Thief, or the filmmaker who dreams of an opus called ""O Shoot for the Stars"" and hopes to capture Marlene Dietrich as the young Werner yon Braun and John Wayne as the first V-2 rocket. But much of the time is spent in comparing the incomparable Max's with uptown ""sandbox bars"" (the Singles) and in recounting the author's personal history and philosophy, in so doing he commits the only unpardonable sin in Max's milieu -- he's dull.
