THE WIND FROM THE MOUNTAINS

Beyond Sing the Woods was one of the ""finds"" of 1936 -- the sort of book that makes reading a continual adventure. Now, fearfully, I approached the sequel, only to find the same enchantment, the same sense of fresh fields, the same sweep and rhythmic beauty of style. The pace of the story is a little more rapid -- possibly it has less of the saga quality. But there is again the sense of the place coming alive, essential as are the characters to the development of the story. I strongly advise selling the books as a unit to all who missed the first. They are closely linked, though once under way, this carries alone. The story picks up exactly where the earlier book left off, and follows through from the marriage of Adelaide and Dag to the close. A deeply moving study of three characters and their impact, the one on the other -- and of the lesser characters that made their mark. A gorgeous book -- one not to be missed.
