In translation from the Italian, this is a curt, noncommittal account of a minor skirmish in World War II- the transportation of sixteen girls from Athens to Volos where they are designated for the military brothels. A young Italian tells the story in the first person- from the time when they are recruited through the days on the road; they draw the fire of the partisans- who are naturally aroused; the gay and giving Elenitza is wounded, and then killed off ruthlessly by a superior officer; and he becomes involved with Eftichia, spends one night with her in a hotel but then sullies her with his suspicions.... This ""Army of Love"", a sorry subject at best, occasions a latterday recall- with some personal recrimination and an unquestionable realism.
