Yves de Saint-Agnes, who supplied the Introduction, calls Dr. Ullerstam, ""...the smile on the face of the sexual revolution."" He reads like the Swedish version of Albert Ellis; equally permissive, twice as patronizing and only half as prone to self-congratulat on. A patronizer can be a shocking bore on any subject. And, the young doctor's presumption that all those who disagree with him are either intellectually, stunted or puritanical prudes is no more calculated to persuade than the sexual eccentrics he describes are likely to find a large number of champions. There are chapters defining, pleading the sensitive human qualities of, and defending the sexual freedom of exhibitionists, Peeping Toms, sado/masochists, and such tastes as incest, defilement, child sex partners, homosexuality and pornography. (This last features long orgy excerpts from Miller's Sexus and two patently second rate novels published in Sweden.) The reform of Sweden's penal code excited controversy over the laws applying to sexual conduct. This is Ullerstam's main target for sarcastic sally with prudes running a close second and modern psychiatry third. The publisher's covering letter says that the book caused a sensation in both Sweden and France. Since both countries are Considerably ahead of the U.S. in attitudes toward sexual indulgence, there is no reason to assume that the book will be discussed and dismissed as just another bedtime story here. The Dr.'s prescription for progress includes clubs where exhibitionists and Peeping Toms can mutually satisfy each other's needs and state supervised brothels featuring bizarre gratifications.
