From the Ozark country of Missouri and Arkansas, and based on many years of intimacy with the ""most deliberately unprogressive people"" of America, this is a collection of the profuse and contradictory beliefs that prevail in that region -- a few of which are popular parlance elsewhere. The author, whose Ozarks and Ozark Mountain Folks were published by Vanguard in the early '30's, has arranged, categorically, superstitions concerning the weather, crops and animals and livestock; the household; water witches; mountain medicine from the ""chills-an-fever"", yarb and rubbin' doctors, to the granny women; courtship and marriage, pregnancy and birth, death and burial, etc. A labor of love and research, this is a specialty -- specifically circumscribed.
