by Velia Ercole ‧ RELEASE DATE: Sept. 7, 1934
Disappointing -- in view of the acclaim the writer has won abroad. A story of an Australian girl, orphaned, who seeks her mother's family in a provincial town of northern France, and finds utter lack of understanding and no place for her in the strange family, dominated by the sinister old aunt. A drab story, but lacking a conviction of tragedy; the interest is not sufficiently sustained to carry one through the succession of futile incidents. Appeal distinctly limited. Possibly some of the Julian Green audience will find some slender thread of similarity.
