The West Country, riding country again (Pride of the Moor, etc.), where racing topples good men and good horses and creates legends like Danny Duncan, still remembered as the finest steeplechase jockey never to have won a big race. Now he's a middle-aged trainer but he's never given up--particularly on a moody underachiever called The Lord Mayor with vicious reflexes. Or on his hope that his firstborn and favorite, Graham, who'd left for London, would carry on. Which Graham didn't want to do until Danny is almost kicked to death by The Lord Mayor and he takes charge for a time. But it is young Andrew, his fourteen -year-old, who proves to have really been sired by Danny Duncan when Andrew races The Lord Mayor to victory. . . . A pleasant kind of sentimental realism with a predictable but still fast track at the close. The Lord Mayor will do better than show and show and should place nicely. For all ages.
