by Vicki Cobb ‧ RELEASE DATE: April 29, 1981
Since Martin Gardner's Perplexing Puzzles and Tantalizing Teasers (1969), most optical illusion collections have seemed redundant. But Cobb expands the concept of illusions; discusses them in groups that make her collection more than just one trick after another; includes illusions to fool the senses of touch, taste, sound, and motion as well as ordinary optical ones; and introduces some real sanity-benders kids will want to try on their friends. When you are not discombobulating your senses to demonstrate some scientific principle, you can pick up a list of sound effects and how to create them, or try out Cobb's invitation to ""be your own stroboscope,"" making horizontal bars seem to appear on a TV screen or a rotating black-and-white disc on a turntable seem to stop spinning. What you do is hum a note ""around a bass A fiat."" A guaranteed mind-spinner.
