THE AMERICAN THEATRE

From the first actors, players and stages in the new world to The Living Theatre, a ""provocative group"" which ""had a big success with a play on dope addiction (The Connection) and further successes in Europe,"" Wehrum surveys American theater history through minstrel shows and melodrama, vaudeville and the rise of Broadway, operetta and musical comedy up to Hair, ""a rousing 'with it' rock musical by three brilliant young men."" Re mainstream drama, ""unforgettable too are the fine plays of Arthur Miller, Thornton Wilder, Tennessee Williams, William Inge and many others."" We can't think of any use for such capsule sketches except as answers for an ill-conceived quiz, and despite the introductory boost by Cornelia Otis Skinner, we predict a short run.
