The High Elk family traces its genealogy back to a Brule Sioux of that name who participated in the battle of Little Big Horn and later started a herd of choice horses -- now dwindled to a single filly and a mare about to foal. If young Joe High Elk's loss of the filly in a storm, and the discovery of a horse thief on the nearby wildlife preserve both resolve themselves without much fuss, so does the mystery of High Elk's more valuable hidden treasure -- a bundle containing a pictograph record which reveals the identity of the Indian who killed Custer. The High Elks' remarkable heirloom is made more believable than the valuable mink trapped by Jimmy Yellow Hawk (p. 325, J-99), but none of the family's activities ever amount to anything more than an artificial demonstration of their Sioux Heritage. Best read for the background, if at all.
