THE SEVEN CITIES OF GOLD

The 16th century of the conquistadors and Coronado's search for the fabled, fabulous seven cities of Cibola as a base for a picturesque, picaresque novel which follows, fairly closely, the story of that expedition. Within this frame, it is the story of Carlos, who falls in love with the amorous, acquisitive Cristabella, and for her joins Coronado's party. Here are the three years of promise- and of failure, as they cross desolate, disastrous country, face the hostility of Indians, hunger, death,- as Coronado falls ill, and Carlos finds comfort only in the steady support of Anita, a mestizo girl. But Carlos cannot forget Cristabella, until finally they return to Mexico and Carlos realizes that Anita, rather than Cristabella, is his love.... Colorful, but without the display of action and incident usually found in the genre, and conjecturably more limited.
