Even though Kahl's plots have become as predictable as her singsong verse, she still manages to make the fulfillment of expectations part of the fun. Here the Duchess and Duke's thirteen daughters, believing that they are following their Halloween costumed mother, end up in the hut of a real witch who turns them into toads. But little Gunhilde's unraveling scarf leads their parents to the spot, and the Duke's involuntary ker-choo proves the magic word that breaks the spell. As for the pictures, if Kahl's minimal outlines seem even more perfunctory than usual, their familiarity is enough to keep this medival family's old friends in tow.
