Lotte resented her mother's decision to remarry, and she was determined to stay in Lottegaard in Denmark rather than join her parents at their new home in New York. There was a family tradition to name the oldest girl in each generation Lotte, and the old home had a special room with pictures of all of the Lottes and with the special locket and dress which they had worn for confirmations and weddings. The description of her eventual recognition of the need to be with her mother and new father is incomplete and unsatisfactory. The story is primarily interesting for its portrayal of Copenhagen and the Danish country village.
