BARBARY

Spunky kid and courageous cat find home in space. Orphaned Barbary smuggles her beloved cat, Mick, to her new home in space, but Mick has a penchant for mischief that threatens their security. Although temporarily redeemed by his rat-catching, Mick's last escapade seems to be heading the space research station Einstein for an intergalactic incident until Barbary and friend Heather enlist the aid of benevolent aliens. Mclntyre brings to her first children's book the sense of place and people that has made her a popular adult sf author. Despite a time-worn plot, the adults, kids and cat are real-seeming, the tension and pacing engrossing. A lot of physics and engineering are woven unobtrusively into the book. Good for buffs and newcomers.
