THE TEMPLE: A Book of Prayers

This is a re-issue of a notable collection of pastoral prayers by the once widely known minister of King's Weigh Church in London, whose liturgical bent finally brought him into the Roman Catholic Church. An introduction is supplied by Dr. Martin Halverson, of the National Council of Churches. Taking George Herbert's poem, ""The Temple,"" as inspiration, Orchard organized these one hundred twenty prayers around the headings of The Outer Gate, The Inner Court, Evening Sacrifice, The Altar of Incense, and The Holy Place. Reading these prayers nearly a half-century after their composition, the reader may sense the flavor of the first decades of liberal protestant religion in this century, and the author's inveterate poetic and subjective style that prevails over his avowed concern for an objective, Catholic style of liturgical prayer. Perhaps of more interest as a remembrance than as a source of prayer for today.
