In the '50's Mr. Heath produced two harsh-grained novels of rural Alabama and this satiric jab at courthouse square mores takes place via the reminiscences of one Robert Hackamore Horton, barber and official storyteller of Hackamore, Alabama. In a genial soda pop-and-flyswatter style, he spins out tale after tale of local lore, history, genealogy and sudden deaths. A pilot burns to a crisp in a barn after a crash; a father and son are hung; another is electrocuted in a tub. There are also many murders with and without corpses and with and without solutions. . . . Old family, respectable citizens and trash -- all the good old boys in those good old times.
