by Walt Wilhelm ‧ RELEASE DATE: Sept. 17, 1970
Mr. Wilhelm had an intriguing childhood; he was kind of a Tom Sawyer of the gold rush circuit along with his six brothers and sisters as they followed their prospector father from one boom town to another. Their father was something else. He could dig a privy, sink a mine shaft, fight off claim jumpers, skin a mule and pow-wow with the Indians all before breakfast. And Mom became one of the best gold pan assayers in the territory when she wasn't busy feeding her family with venison stuffed with dried apples or making perfume from soap, pine needles and cornmeal mush. The author remembers well the details of life as it was lived off the land in the very early 1900's and his vanished Americana is both real and inviting.
