THE ISLAND STALLION RACES

Different from Walter Farley's well known books about The Black and his line, this is set in the Caribbean and is a fantasy for the here and gone department. Steve, a boy from the States in summering on remote Azul Island where his scholarly friend Pitch has come to study this supposed last outpost of the Spanish conquistadores. He is delighted to find Flame, an Arabian stallion, and his band there, makes friends quickly with the great horse and dreams of racing him someday. Then, with Pitch away, Steve receives a strange visit from an unearthly pair of men named Flick and Jay. Though dressed like eastern businessmen, Flick and Jay arrive in a glowing airship and can communicate with Steve almost by mental telepathy. The upshot is that Flame and Steve are taken to Havana to win an important race and then, just as suddenly, find themselves on the island again. Did it all really happen? The epilogue assures us that it did, for the race is written up in a newspaper. The only answer is that Steve really had a visitation from outer space.
