If youngsters can be borne along by the high spirits of an impending celebration and the fear of Bitgi that, not having practiced on his drum, he'll be left out, then perhaps the oversights in this oversized book won't matter--namely that the colors don't match from page to page (making it hard to identify the children), that the Baslers' celebration, Morgenstreich, is never explained. At their best, the illustrations have the cocky wit of Tomi Ungerer; at their worst, the host of colorful forms cancel each other out. Altogether an uproar, okay if you can make it out.
