Report repeated from the January 1st bulletin, when scheduled for earlier publication, as follows: ""Some of the magic of Macken's on the Wind and some of the down-to-earth quality of The Bogman is in this group of short stories act in the west of Ireland. Townsmen, villagers and rurals come alive in tales that have their full measure of humor and pathos. There's a bit of the supernatural; there's some oblique commentary on the amoral approach to life; there's fun in the weighing out of a crude sort of justice. Some of the stories introduce and reintroduce certain characters, who become- to the reader- symbolic of the characteristics Macken wishes to portray. These stories haven't the staying power of Maurice Walsh's Small Da Man but they do recall something of the poetic quality of the early Donn Byrne, now regrettably out of print.
